Alsa sound upgrade failure

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I was having a USB sound adapter problem and one suggestion was an upgrade from Alsa 1.0.18rc3 to 1.0.20 which could possibly solve the problem. I followed the procedure outlined on this blog: http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/20...tu-jaunty-904/

Unfortunately, after upgrading I no longer have any audio and when I give the command cat /proc/asound/version I receive a no such file found.

Incidentally sound from my speakers was working just fine until I performed the upgrade.

I attempted a reinstall of 1.0.20 and simply got a message that all files were already there or words to that effect.

As a Newbie I really have no idea of what steps to take at this point.
