Alsa edit in slackware

Hi

I wanted to get sound up in Slackware 10.1 I read a post and it stated to go to a konsole go to su to root and then open Alsamixer to mute or unmute channels.

Ok that done here is the silly part of the question i have gone in to the Alsamixer and turned the volumes up but I notice in the top left hand corner for all items it says "Item master [off]" for example how can i change this to on?
