Alsa and STAC9750

This problem must have been solved many times before. Ive found some links about it, but none that make sense or that work for this newby.

Iḿ getting no sound out of my machine which has a
Card: Intel 82801DB-ICH4
Chip: SigmaTel STAC9750,51

Iḿ using the latest xubuntu, but the problem has been the same on Ubunut, Lubuntu, Puppy and the other distros ive tried.

I think my sound card is not supported by alsamixer
(Yes, Ive truned all the levels up full)
But there is a way of configuring it? or using another driver?

Here is what my alsabase.conf file has to say for itself.

# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-3

Iḿ getting no sound from the speakers, and really quiet sound from the headphone jack with some distros. With alsamixer levels cranked up full itś barely audible and distorted.

honeybadger 12-30-2011 02:41 PM

Had this problem once. Try to run 'aumixer'. This is typical *bubtu. They have multiple commands to do the same thing - and some of the things badly but that is just my opinion. I think this has something to do with these guys using pulseaudio.
Hope this helps.

andypag 12-30-2011 03:02 PM

andypag@Toughbook:~$ aumixer
No command 'aumixer' found, did you mean:
Command 'asmixer' from package 'asmixer' (universe)
Command 'amixer' from package 'alsa-utils' (main)
aumixer: command not found

Iḿ a newby, is there something else I have to do first?

(p.s. I thought the Honey Badger didnt give a shi1)

honeybadger 12-30-2011 03:18 PM

I found a webpage that might help you and it is https://help.ubuntu..com/community/userdocumentation that describes the problems that you are mentioning.
BTW why did you think I did not give a shi1.

I have a good friend whose nick name is the Honey Badger, and we always tease him because of this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r7wHMg5Yjg. Made me smile when I saw your login name.

Thanks for the links will try that next and report back
