Allow me to introduce myself
 

Hello All,

I'm not sure where the LQ forum for members to introduce themselves are so I figure I take a shot at doing it here. My name is Cliff, and I am a newbie when it comes to using linux. One of my roommates just introduced me to Sabayon Linux and it looked really cool so I'm here to learn more about Linux and perhaps begin the transition to using it more often. The first thing I would like to learn is to able to dual-boot or multi-boot into linux. So that I can boot XP, but also have the option to boot ubuntu, sabayon or federora etc. It would be great if someone could explain this to me or direct me to a thread that would provide good information on it. I do have Acronis as a partition software installed on my pc. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to LQ.
Linux isn't difficult - you just have to get started. We all started knowing nothing.
Back up your personal files in case of mistakes.
Choose your distribution - I'd recommend kubuntu 6.06.1LTS Get it here:
http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php
Burn it to a CD as an iso file (Important!)
Defrag your windows disk(s).
Boot from the CD (you may need to set this in your BIOS), it'll run from the CD (slowly), then click Install to install it.
Follow the default recommendations. It'll automatically install grub as your bootloader, which will give you a choice of linux or windows at boot time.
If you encounter problems, search this board (see the SEARCH button, above?), or provide details of what is wrong and ask again here.

Hey thanks a lot, I'll give it a try.

I have found that Suse(open0 is great for dual booting with windows. when you start the installer it takes you through the steps pretty easily and does all the hard work for you.
