Aliases or Shortcuts Red Hat?

Brand new to Linux. I installed Red Hat 9 on my Athlon. Both Gnome and KDE if that matters.

I want to put an Alias or Shortcut of several programs on my desktop and I don't know how.

Thanks in advance.

right click

choose "create new"
then "link to application"

under the "execute" tab browse to the app location

under the "general" tab you can assign the icon to be used

Right click where?

I don't get "new".

just right click your desktop to get a popup menu...
the menu item will be obvious, as i forget what the actual name of it is, but it will be something like salparadise has mentioned...i thought it was just link to application....but just go through each menu item, there is only like 6 or so....

as a linux user of just over a month i'd recomend using KDE if your coming from windows right click on the background image just like win go to create new-> link to application the rest is self explanitory.
gnome's nice but have fun ever adding to the main menu. kde much better in all ways.....just a lllllllllittle slower though...worth it for me.. oh well.

ah yes
humble apologies

missed the "on the desktop" bit off the "right click" sentence

doesn't work

When I right click I get none of those.

I was able to window key/drag what I think were aliases onto the desktop. But I'm really not sure.

Just to clarify - Aliases are command line "substitutions", you'd typically use them in a shell to save you typing a whole command - I think your talking about "shortcuts".

which desktop/window manager are you using???

cordedpoodle 09-09-2003 08:40 PM

Just to clarify and ...

Aliases are Shortcuts on the Mac OS or should I say visa versa because I'm pretty sure Apple was the first to use them.

I think I'm using KDE. At the request of my more technical partner I've also installed Gnome.
