agetty password where

Hi all,

Would someone be as good as to tell me where to put the password
that agetty asks for.

Code:
agetty 9600 ttyS0
Password:
Root and current user do not work.

According to man this is the correct response.
But whose password is not mentioned.

At the other end of the cable is a microcontroller.
Has no password.
Works fine on minicom and cu.

agetty is normally used in the /etc/inittab file to allow a login from a serial line. Is that what you are doing?

Also, I have looked at two copies of online man pages and can't find any reference to the password prompt you are getting and that you say you saw a reference to the man page. The only password prompt I can think of that makes any sense is the username/password prompts the terminal connecting to ttyS0 would be presented with. So color me thoroughly confused.

It sounds to me that you are running the program as a normal user. I don't think that could work either as agetty would not be able to get access to the /etc/shadow file to authenticate, nor would it be able to log the user in even if it could authenticate.

The manual for agetty states that it prompts for user name
but what I really see is as above.

I can run as user or root makes no difference.
Can supply root as name or root password.

I will explain my set up.
I have a computer which I am logged into.
I can be root or user.
A serial port is connected by cable from the computer
to a microcontroller.

Using for example the cu command.

Code:
cu -l /dev/ttyS0 -s 9600 --nostop --parity=none dir
Connected:
And I establish two way communication computer-microcontroller.
Similar situation with minicom after setup by root with minicom -s.
Can also with more difficulty use miniterm.

Now try agetty

Code:
agetty 9600 /dev/ttyS0
Password:
Never get passed this point.
Have tried all combinations and various switches.

What password is agetty looking for?

I can't imagine why it would be prompting for any password to the console it was initiated from. And w/o going to more effort than I am willing to, I don't have access to agetty. (I have a getty I am running on an old system, and beyond that through package management I can download mgetty and mingetty.) But I wonder again if this is the program you want anyway. The only way I can see that it would make any sense would be if you were going to have your microcontroller log into your Linux system.

Going ***way*** out on a limb here. Maybe it is sensing the terminal, xterm, or whatever you are invoking it from and thinking that is where you are trying to log in from. But even that doesn't make any sense because your aren't geting a prompt for username. Have you tried invoking it from /etc/inittab and seeing if it prompts /dev/ttyS0 for username/password as expected?
