After password change, can't login to LM 17.2 at all
 

I changed my password through the command line.

The password was accepted as there was no objection.

But login just goes into a loop, then the same login screen appears again.

I tried the old password, but linux said it was not valid.

I see there a few options at the top of the login screen (sessions, software rendering...) Would these help?

Any help appreciated. If I have to do a reinstall, so be it.

Try logging in as root and setting the user password that way.

So, when you enter your password in the Login Screen, it gets accepted, but then again, you are sent back to the login screen. Is that correct?

Press 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' at the login screen and try logging in with your credentials. If you are successfully logged in, then there might be problems with your display manager. If it fails there, then, the credentials are at fault.

You can use 'Ctrl+Alt+F7' to get back to the login screen. Also, after changing the password, did you install/update any software package(s)?

I tried one of the recovery modes at the boot screen (I dual boot with win 7), but I pulled out because I don't know how to work those options. But when I did one of the entries said "fail" but it went by so quickly I could not see what it was.

I just used the Ctrl + Alt + F1 option. Does not get me in. Just goes around and around asking for the password for the user I created when I installed LM.

I have to use Ctrl+Alt+F1 before the real login screen because that is never showing up. Just a black screen that I have to force shut down to get out of.

I am ready to reinstall if it comes to that.

Yes. After you press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2-F6), only a black screen will appear. That is where you enter your username and password. If the username and password are valid, then you will receive welcome message, similar to this one (look for the Welcome to Linux Mint phrase).

From any term user name would be root. Password would be what you set it to.

That is for resetting the password right. But in the case of Linux Mint 17, the default root password is the very first password that is entered at the time of user creation (during installation). So that would be a problem if he doesn't remember it.

Lets try to figure out whether his problem is with his credentials or the desktop manager

thanks very much for this. This worked to reset the password, but I had already done this through the terminal when I could login in.

I also am still not able to get into linux. It just keeps going around and around.

I tried this originally to solve the problem the "cannot update ICEauthority file" appearing login.

But this problem is still here as well as the login problem

so I am just going to reinstall. I have started a new thread on that. I will mark this thread solved.

The issue here is not forgotten password. I clearly remember both the original installation password and the new password I tried to create.

the original was just accepted by root and I just changed it to the new password again in recovery mode. But I still cannot login into LM.

Can you boot into single user mode? init1?

Try doing Mint Recovery

Create a new user in console (Ctrl+Alt+F[1-5])
Reboot.
Login as new user.
Report back.
