first check your BIOS settings and make sure all your hard drives are set to 'AUTO'

if it still not working ,in the grub cli type:
Code:
find /boot/grub/stage1
it's gonna give you a list of hdx...,for exemple hd0
then type
Code:
setup (hd0)
type quit and reboot.

good luck

it's either a GRUB problem or BOIS problem
first insert the installation cd and try the rescue mode.
if it doesn't work then check you bios , some motherboards bios cannot deal with extended partitions on more modern HD.

I had the same problem as mataitsane on my OpenSuSE 12.1 machine, and it appeared just like he said, I corrected it by going to rescue mode and running

Code:
fsck /dev/sda1
and it solved everything.
