after Enabling swap space Fedora hangs on boot
While there are hints this is the video, I do not agree as this system has been working for some time.
Enabling swap space [OK] After the above message on startup the system just hangs! The system is a Dell Demension XPS500 running Fedora 2. Is there a chance something else is wrong with swap or otherwise? |
fedora core 2 hangs on booting (swap?)
hi all,
i have exactly the same problem: i have installed FC2 on my shiny new machine and after a very clean installation, it hangs dead when booting, right after the Enabling Swap Space: [OK] ideas??? solutions???? |
i dunno FC2 but i think you should look in the /etc/rc.d/rc.S file to see what's the next line after
something like '' swapon -a '' ( after that it hangs........) egag |
but it hangs and get blocked before finishing the booting
process... so how can i check the computer file system in this case?? i have discovered that the autopartition utility fix the swap memory to 1G.. but on the end it uses a strange "maximum swap partition" (or alike), which is fixed to 2G. so i have reinstalled FC but now lowering a bit this number to see what´s up.. tell you then |
well... i think you gotto boot-up with a floppy or your install-cd if possible....
maybe FC2 has a rescue-mode or somthing like that....( you should be able to get to a CLI and mount your HD ) anyway, what i wrote before is just to find a clue of what's wrong, ( the next line after 'swapon -a ' orso ). egag |
I Have the same problem .... i tried with Fedora, and now im using RH8!!!
In Redhat 8 i log in but then it freezes totaly! In Fedora it hangs on Enabling Swap, and it doesnt say ok neither failed! |
hi,
( for the fedora-prob. ) Think you can use a live-cd ( i've got the " Slax " version ). It boots from cd and doesn't use a HD. The partitions are just mounted ro in the /mnt dir. To make any changes on them, you should remount them r/w egag |

I have FC2 kernels, 1.358 and 1.521. 1.358 boots fine, however I'm having the same problem with 1.521. I added in echo statements all around rc.sysinit, and found out that it executes to completion, and then the system hangs. Does anyone know what happens next? Thanks |
I have the same problem about 30% of the time!
in boot time after seeing "Enabling swap space [ok]", the system hangs. I also notice this happens more frequently when I boot without being plugged into power, or have new devices connected. Seems there is a bug in 521 kernel boot area. Anybody?

jazzquezz,
did u try lowering swap? what's your new size? does it make any difference? My swap is set to 2G, which equals my physical memory size. |
I have a similar problem. FC2 boots ok, but the swap partition seems to be gone. Then, all things start slowing down and I see the main parition filling up un-used space.
I figured I needed to fix the partition, but so far haven't been able to. |
I dumped Fedora and went w/ Suse
After almost 3 weeks struggle w/ Fedora w/ numerous problems (missinng components in the distro, system locking up, booting problem, performance, ...), I finally reached the conclusion like many, Fedora is just a way RH wants other people test the ground for them, support is their last priority. My personal experience w/ Suse couldn't be happier, just one night's install and configure, I got everything running smoothly. Performance is also much better. On a scale of 10, I give Suse an 8, and Fedora, a 2.
Bye bye Fedora, I'm not coming back. |
