Advise on Mail System
 

Hi all,

I admit I could find this by digging deep via google, forums and newsgroups. But as I am looking not only for a how-to but for a recommendation, I would appreciate any quick links given here.

I am an experienced IT guy, but new to Linux (though I hacked *nix around 10 years ago). I am looking to setup a mail system that can

- send and receive SMTP mail, preferrebly for multiple virtual domains
- store locally-destined messages
- have clients retrieve them via IMAP4 and ideally POP3
- a web interface to read the mail would be great but not
absolutely necessary
- allow only authenticated clients to submit SMTP mails via
this server (anti-spam/ avoid open relay). I would not like
SMTP after POP.

This system needs only to take care for limited users (let's say around 10) but each user will maintain a larger archive (let's say each around 20,000 messages and a total of 2 to 5 gig) on the server.

I am currently using Postfix and think I have understood relay operations. So I would appreciate if the solution includes postfix as MTA.

Can anyone suggest the buildings blocks of such a solution and also provide a link to a HOWTO to set it up?

if you want to solution to include postfix, then... use it.... i'm really not sure what you're expecting to be told here. you are free to use whatever takes your fancy for each section, and unless you pick a non standard solution they should all easily fall into place doing their own thing, ignorant of all others. As these systems are ignorant, there will be no global howto.... just stick to the manpages, and possible individual howtos etc...

e.g. try horde/imp or squirrelmail for webmail, for imap4/pop3 try wu-imap or cyrus-imap. Everything else you have sepcified simply requires you to read the postfix docs.
