adsl start error

Users,

I used to have adsl configured to start automatically during start up to x windows. To cut the story, adsl start does not work.
I have re-installed the relevant programs (ppp, rpppoe, etc)

Below is the error reply when I try adsl start:

open a terminal console
type su, then password to become root user
type adsl-start
response is...failure:- timed out /usr/sbin/adsl-start: line 193: 4635 terminated $connect $@ >dev/null2>&1

Question 1 what does the response mean?
Q2 what file can I verify and edit accordingly cocnerning line 193 of adsl-start program

I use gnu linux mandrake 9.2, gnome 2.4. The modem is alcatel thomson speedtouch 330 usb connection.

Hello

Well the 9.2 version of Mandrake does not like this modem, i don't know why, but it's is true...

but don't worry...

There is a very good solution.

in this link:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch/

You can find a little but very useful script that will enable you modem. It is very well explained in the readme document, but i'll give you a little clue.

- You need to download and decompress the archive in a directorie you prefer.
- You need the alcatel microcode: mgmt.o (this is the better).
- follow the instructions in the script and it will work.

Just another thing, the microcode is not easy to find in internet, but it is in you Mandrake 9.1 cd's, i think it is in the fourth cd, but if it is not in this cd, i'm sure you'll can find it...

Good luck

adsl start

I'm always amused at the classic catch 22: can't access the internet via linux box, solution, download the necessary files! (I write this from a work pc operating windoze)

On the url you quote I note the following:
I can't see any reference to a readme file. Do you mean that this very file is included in the file to download??
I already have the mgmt.o file installed on my linux pc

Thank you so far.

yes the readme or todo file is inside.

anyway, the steps you have to follow are

- download and save it in a folder
- untar it
- copy the mgmt.o file in the same folder
- type ./speedtouchconf.sh
- follow the instructions of the script

At this momment i'm not so sure about ./speedtouchconf.sh but i think this is the right name of the script, don't worry about that, you'll see it.

when the script ends with the work, it prints a few lines, in this lines you'll fin the command you have to write to start your conecction in every start of your system.

The script offers as well the posibility of start / stop the connection any time you want. The command to do that will appear in the screen too.

Good luck
