ADSL is not working.
 

I have Mandrake 8.3, and everything else works well except my ADSL connection and TuxRacer.

First of all, draknet tells me that my ethernet card is "3com Etherlink (Boomerang)", but I know for certain that it's "3com Etherlink XL PCI Combo Nic (3c900-combo)".
Only thing that is similar to those cards is that number 3c900.
Then mandrake control center wont let me change it! :(

Also automatic IP address reconizing via DHCP won't work (maybe because of the card?), and my connection provider told it supports it. Well, he was partially right, it works under windows. :(

Oh yes, one thing! When in configuration window, it tells me that it found one ethernet card, and it is preselected. Should I select ADSL too, although it's external?

I'm not good at Konsole, but I know how to move around, copy, delete and view scripts and stuff with cat or less.

PS. What's wrong with my TuxRacing? :cry:

Is your ADSL connection a static IP or a dynamic one? If it is static, see if you can get your IP address either from your ISP or by hooking up a Windows machine and using winipcfg. I have DSL access via Direct TV DSL and my automatic didnt work either. Once I set it up manually though, it worked fine. My setup here is external DSL modem running into an 8 port hub which my machine is plugged into. I also have a 3Com nic card. In setup, configure it as a LAN NOT ADSL and try it that way if you can get your IP address. BTW< you also need subnet mask, and gateway and dns infoi as well.

catch my service provider at monday, ask the correct IP and mask numbers and setup manually.
I believe it's static IP...
Oh btw, how I can check the correct values from my windows (dual-boot)?

That Tux racing still haunts me. It starts to load in start bar, then it just disappears. Seems like I don't have something it needs, but sounds and graphics seem to work in other applications.
Do I need something similar to OpenGL?

Boot your machine in Windows mode.... click on start and go to the Run command. If you asre using 98, type the word winipcfg in box and click ok. Scroll in the list to your 3com ethernet card. In the box that comes up will be your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway address. Should you need more information such as the IP for your DHCP server, etc, click on More Info.

Values I took from windows didn't fix the problem.

Maybe ethernet card has wrong drivers, because it failed detecting it correctly, thus installing Boomerang drivers?
What I need to do now? Re-install?

Hmmm, sounds likely it has the wrong drivers. Does Windows recognize it correctly? If so, then it is not your net card. Usually 3Com cards configure with no problems at all (I myself use 3Com). Try unistalling the card and then re-install it.

Krhm, now I'm so sorry to ask but... how to uninstall?

As I said, I also use a 3Com card. In Linuxconf, under Networking,Host names and IP devices, what does the kernel module sy for your card? Mine says 3c59x. Also, do you have more than one network card in the machine??? If so, that may also be a reason why it is not detecting it properly and you may need to reserve or allocate space at boot time for it by passing it on the command line or in lilo.conf if that is what you are using. There are many good resources on the net for installing with multiple NIC cars..

I don't have 2 netcards, and I'm going to check that code (3c59x thingy) right away, then report back here.

Where from I can check values Linux has given to netcard, as if I change them manually, disable kudzu (no more failed detects) and install correct drivers also manually somehow, it should work. Right?

You can check the values in Linuxconf as I stated above. Start Linuxconf, go to Networking, then Hostnames and IP devices. You may also want to check out Mandrake's resource site at http://www.mandrakeexpert.com
