Angry ADSL connecting with Speedtouch USB.

Hi All

I am running a K7-2000+ with Mandrake 9 pppd 2.4.1

Well i followed the Speedtouch How-To and FAQ by Edourd Gomez
when i input

run_modem -f -m /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o

it takes about 20 sec to return to the prompt

pppd call adsl

returns to the prompt instantly
then If i input

ifconfig ppp0

I get a description of the interface

and the interface appears to be working.

My problem is when I open a browser it can't access any websites.
when I ping an outside ip address , I get an error about the network not being up.

any suggestions?

DNS not set up correctly or not picking up my isp's dns servers?

has both my nameserver addresses installed in it.

Could firewalling or squid be stopping me getting out?

the other thing I think it might be is the user line in my /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file.

I have it set as

user "westnet/"

any help would be greatly appreciated

All you should need is to follow this post by Steve Scrimpshire/Omar Serenity. I haven't used Mdk for a while but when I did this was all it ever took to get it going.

If you are using the Shorewall firewall included with MDK 9.0 :

shorewall restart

This cleans out the firewall rules and builds them up again. Because your connection was not configured in the MCC the firewall rules do not match the pppa you are using. A restart of shorewall while the connection is up sets the correct rules. You will need to do this every time after starting your adsl connection.
Best is making a script for the adsl-start and making it start when your computer boots. You can then make a second script for the shorewall restart. Make for both scripts a soft link in your /etc/rc.d/rc3.d or put them in your /home/xxx/.kde/Autostart
