Adoption
would anyone like to adopt a linux n3wb i only know a couple basics but i have a bunch of questions
installing.sound and video not working.using different programs etc im using redhat 9 heeeellppp meee |
That depends on your willingness to learn and experiment and spend endless nights doing as you are told to achieve perfection :)
Just kidding. Maybe you could start with (where you are from) and some specific questions. |
im in southern new jersey
and basicly i wanna learn everything i can the acheiving perfection thing is what im going for ;-) well i have no sound and the sound card detection doesnt work says that no sound card is detected when there is damnit! :-) but yeah same with video i guess i'll start there |
Do you know which sound card you have? What distro are you running and which kernel?
|
you should get a new distribution as redhat 9 is pretty old now
there is fedora if u like redhat , you could also checkout mandriva |
i have a soundblaster live
and yeah i was thinking about getting slack 10.1 but i heard its all shell and stuff and i dont know that much so i didnt wanna get stuck and be absolutely lost |
Don't worry about getting lost--we're all in this together! If you truely want to learn everything about Linux, Slackware's the way to go!

Yp, Slack is the way if you want to learn. But, you could go with FC3 or FC4 (but I would recomend FC2 (a failsafe option) (I mean, that was the last FC that supported all my hardware by default.

{insert mandetory Gentoo is better line}
Personally I use Gentoo, and think that the install will teach you a lot about Linux, aswell as being darned easy to follow. {/end} Gentoo will detect your hardware, if you tell it to, and In my experience software is easier to handle than in slack. |
There is something to be said about ease of handling!
Distro wars aside, how cool is Linux that it can be so many different things, and yet stay the same? |
