adjusting cpu performance/overload power downs ubuntu 8.10 intrepid

hi im new to ubuntu and linux and am having a few troubles with the power management. when suspended or in hibernate upon resume(after extended periods like this) i get a blank screen and the processor icon stops. i belive its caused by poor cpu power management because i also have situations where the computer runs so hard that it just shuts off(so far only when multiple videos playing. I run a 32 bit version of ubuntu 8.10 intrepid although i have an amd 64 dual w/ 3gb RAM so i shouldnt have many problems. I'm looking for a program or system options in Gnome to adjust power performance. Any help is greatly appreciated. ----- Note* I know my ati x1250 isnt fully compatible with ubuntu(prior error messages) and causes many video problems, could that have an impact on the suspend resume display freezing and over-load shutdowns? Thx!
