adding wi-fi canon printer to my to notebook with OS linuxmint Rosa 17.3 cinnamon 64bit

I have linux mint Rosa17.3 Cinnamon 64bit on my Samsung 305 U 1A notebook.
i wish to connect my canon wi-fi printer Pixma7500 series to it. I have located what I believe is the correct driver. The file is cnjifilter2-5.00.rpm-rpm-tar.gz. which I have in my download file.
I have searched and found a number of instructions telling me how to open tar.gz files via Terminal. I have tried many of them but nothing seems to happen. it tells me file not located. I sent a doc. to my printer as it is shown on my laptop hardware but it did not print. Can anyone give me some idea of what I may be doing wrong. I have nothing in the way of tech knowledge and have no problem with this on my desk top which is a windows OS. I have had to research the meaning of tar and gz etc which I understood a bit, but it is a bit too much for my brain., as at 86 the brain does not like trying to take on new tech info.
Thanks for any info

A tar file is simply a collection of files (usually the contents of a directory tree) compiled into a single file for convenience. These files are usually compressed to save bandwidth in download, and the .gz suffix shows that gzip has been used to compress this one. Such a file is commonly referred to as a "tarball".

Tarballs are quite easy to unpack. You just use tar -xf filename. However the name of your tarball indicates that it will unpack to an rpm file, and that is an installation format used by Red Hat distros like Fedora. Mint belongs to the Debian family, so you need a .deb file, not a .rpm. Go back to the site you got the driver from and see if there is a version more suitable for your distro.
