Adding users

After some very ill-advised messing around as root, I ended up with a non-working system. So I re-installed the system on the / partition, leaving the /home partition untouched. I have added a new user to the system using my old user name, set the users home partition to /home/username, but when I try to log on nothing happens.

What's going wrong?

I'm using Mandrake 10.0

If you used the same username as you had previously then adduser command would prompt you about the user's directory being already there and that you want to use that same directory. I am not familiar with Mandrake but there it must have the adduser command.
