Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I'm running slack 10.0 I know the command to add a user is adduser
But when I add an account i can't do anything, not even startx
What permissions should I give the account? this account is going to be for me so I don't have to use root
normally adduser and a simple setup should work. you dont need anything special. in fact, all you really need is to enter the new user name and create a password, nothing else.
can you login with the new user you create? can you run any programs? can you startx in root?

Yeah, I can login but I can't run anything. And yes I can run startx in root.
i've installed slack on several machines and have never had that problem. something you configured in the install that's causing the problem? i'm sorry, i don't know.
