Adding user to a group

Sorry this may be a stupid question...

Ok here is the problem.
I have got a user account in multiuser environment(Fedora4).
There are many user groups in the system.
I would like join one of them, and my mate is part of that one.

Can my friend add me to that group, or does one need root priviledges to do that?

I know that useradd normally needs root rights, but since my friend is part of that group already, could he have enough rights to add me to the group?

It really depends on what kind of groups you're referring to, and how the administrator has set it up. If you're referring to standard system user groups, that is an administrator function and requires root to do it. If they're some kind of user work groups instead of system groups, then the answer is a definate maybe. Ask your system administrator.
