adding some lines in fedora 10
 

Hello everybody

I am a newbie to linux .just downloaded fedora 10 to start learning about linux.

for some reason the wireless is not working. The desktop has windows xp on it and i have no problem with the wireless on windows but fedora can not detect it.

i went thru some learning stuff on different linux documentations and downloaded madwifi and i am halfway thru the process.

In the process of fixing this problem,the tutorial is asking to add 4 lines to "/etc/modprobe.conf" as root.

i really do not know how to do this in terminal.i tried couple of times on my own without knowing how exactly to do it ,and was not successful .I need help regarding this,please explain it the way you will for a totally new person who knows nothing about fedora.

Open the terminal and type: su-, then enter root password. Now issue command: gedit /etc/modprobe.conf.
I'm assuming gedit is installed by default in Gnome desktop, running the gedit command as root will open the graphical editor as root so you can make the changes to the file and save it from the file menu.
I don't have Fedora 10, if it does not have gedit, you'll get a "command not found" error. If that happens, issue the same command using the name of a graphical editor you know you have instead of gedit.
There are some command line only editors like vim, but a little tougher to explain in less than 200 words. If the full version of vim is installed, issuing command: vimtutor will put you in a half hour course on learning it.

When I did use Fedora, I found this guy's tuts were very helpful.

If you still don't get the wireless working, start a new thread in the Fedora forum here at LQ and give information regarding which wireless card or computer you're using. You might attract the right reader with experience using Fedora 10 and your wireless device.

As you said ,i ran that command in terminal but it did not go thru and i received an error message regarding not such a file is known.so , i tried 2 or 3 more times to make sure that i am not doing it wrong,but the result was the same .Unfortunately i could not find out what type of desktop i have in fedora 10.

i do not know why the distros of linux are that much different from one another.finding out what type of desktop version you have in open suse 11.1 is piece of cake,but in fedora,i don't know.

anyway ,i decided to go thru that tutorial link that put here and learn more.
