Adding smbfs to Debian

I'm using Debian 3 with 2.2.20-compact and would like to add support for smbfs. Here is what I have tried...

1. Edit the Makefile and add EXTRAVERSION = -compact
2. cp /boot/config-2.2.20-compact ./.config (to 2.2.20 src dir)
3. make menuconfig (add smbfs as a module)
4. make dep; make modules; make modules_install
5. restart (don't know if this is necessary)
6. modprobe smbfs

I get all kinds of unresolved symbol (too many to put in this thread) and the, "Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license and it has unresolved symbols..."

I'm either making some progress or in a patch of weeds...=)

I can get all of the samba packages; however, the 2.2.20-compact kernel does not have support enabled for smbfs. So I need to get the module compiled and loaded into the kernal.
