adding severals apps to the Gnome Menu in debian etch

Hi, from different reasons I didn't download three apps using synaptic or apt-get, i just unpacked the tar.gz and installed the app and everything works but I want that those apps are in the apropiatte menu option in Gnome Menu, for example if the app is programming related I want to put the shortcut in the programming section, if games, music, etc. so what file do I have to modified to add those?

thanks a lot

I guess the easiest way would be to right click on the Gnome foot or Debian icon(I can't remember ) on the panel and select "Edit Menus",then choose appropriate menu and select add item. Then all you have to do is to know which command executes certain app, usually it's like /usr/bin/firefox or firefox %u for Firefox web browser for example,it depends on what app you want to add.
