adding printer in slackware 2.4.22
I have edited /etc/printcap, info below:
print1|The printer:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/print1:\ :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\ :mc=2:\ :sh:\ :lf=/var/log/lpd-error.log: When I run lpc status I get: Printer 'print@localhost' - cannot open connection - No such file or directory Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol This is a local printer, I don't understand why I am getting such an error, or where to look. Thankyou in advance for any help or suggestions. Gary |
Hey Gary. First, does your printer even work? Second, are you trying to use LPRng with CUPS installed? I ran into a couple problems with both of these spooler systems conflicting sometimes. As far as lpc status, try using lpq , does that work?

The printer does work, I have used it on another system. I have also type:
echo "test printer" > /dev/lp0 and have received a reply on the printer. The printer is an Epson action printer t1000 To answer your second question, I am trying to add this printer by hand, in other words editing the /etc/printcap and adding necessary directories and files. Maybe that is where I am making a mistake, I have added a directory /print1 under /var/spool/lpd , and files under print1 of .seq, errs, lock, status. I have also changed permissions. Am I forgetting something? Thankyou, Gary |
I'd suggest you configure your printer by the CUPS web interface.
Open a web browser (konqueror or mozilla for instance) at localhost:631 (no dial connection of course) the "add printer" button and follow instructions. Very easy and fast Hope this helps Ciao |

Thanks for the suggestion, but this computer is a stand-alone. It is not on any network. I would really like to add a printer by commands and editing files. I am a newbie to Linux, but not new to command lanquages. I have worked many years in the telco industry with PDS and TL1, which are proprietary command lanquages.
Thankyou, Gary |

I have now used CUPS to add the printer, but I am still getting the same type of error message when I try to print. Error message is:
sending job ` root@darkstar + 694` to printer1@localhost Cannot open connection to localhost - no such file or directory make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol This is a directly connected printer, could someone tell me why I am receiving such an error message and what is wrong? Thankyou, Gary |
is the cups daemon running?
|
Yes, the CUPS and LPD daemons are running.
