Adding partitions help

First time posting. Learning to add partitions to disk. After doing the command for fdisk /dev/sda1
add the partition 3 when I list the them I get a /dev/sda1p3
not a dev/sda3 like I thought I would get. Please help

You ended up adding a partition within a partition.

You should use fdisk /dev/sda not fdisk /dev/sda1

Why not use gparted, KDE partition manager or cfdisk (if you want go CLI) instead? They have more straightforward interface than fdisk IMHO.
