Adding MP4V2 codec to MPlayer

Please help.

I am trying to add MP4v2 codec too mplayer, as my distro does not come with it standard. (I know this because it doesn't play my mp4 files)

I have downloaded the mplayer codec pack, and installed it to /usr/local/lib/codecs but the log file still tells me it cant find it.

i have downloaded it seperately, and put an so.0.0.0 (or something) file into the same directory, again no dice.

i have now been trying for 2.5 hours, and thats just today, and can't work out how to make it work.

my mplayer log file says the following:

Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
stderr: Cannot find codec 'mpeg4' in libavcodec...
VDecoder init failed
stderr: Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x30355844.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html!

also, where is the DOCS directory located? I have recently migrated from windows, and am finding the lack of a 'program files' directory most frustrating, although the 'which' command has taken away some of my woes to date.

i am using xandros.
