Adding ipv6 address in linux


hi everyone,

i want to add an ipv6 address in linux.
i am going to use the following command.
# /sbin/ifconfig <interface> inet6 add <ipv6address>/<prefixlength>
Can anyone explain how this command will works?
Is that prefix length value is fixed to 64 or is it vary?if so,can you explain how it could be?

It doesn't have to be /64, but it usually is. The person providing you the IPv6 information would tell you.

Hi AlucardZero,

thank you for your reply.

Could you please tell me the various prefix length values has chances to replace the /64.
I am going to use the /64 length is the fixed value.will it gives problem in future ?
else explain me how to configure the prefix length dynamically in the following command.
# /sbin/ifconfig <interface> inet6 add <ipv6address>/<prefixlength>

Hi everyone,

can anyone tell how to use the "top" command in ipv6.
I am new to linux,please provide the options for top command.
i am using "top -b -n 1" for ipv4,if i want to use for ipv6 what could be the change in command?
