Adding a usb-drive to a volume group... possible?

Hi forum,

I'm thinking to get a new external hard disk and using vgextend to add it to a logical volume I have set up that needs to be pretty big. Can this work, and if yes, what would happen if the externel drive became unplugged for instance... would that bork the logical volume and perhaps cause irretrevable data loss?

Any advise appreciated.

In my view it should be possible to do it this way, in other words extend the VG with the device /dev/sd* and go from there. The problem arises with, as you say, if the HD gets disconnected while the FS is mounted and being written to. It could cause inconsistencies in your filesystem. I personally would not go for this solution if I could avoid it simply because of the potential for unintentional USB disconnection.

just my two cents though

I agree paddy2de. I have since moved on to a different hair-brained scheme entirely... I figured out I could reduce a couple of over-endowed partitions and take the space I need from there.

Thanks for input!
