Adding a dir to PKG_CONFIG_PATH

I added a dir containing the pygtk-2.0.pc to my PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable but when doing a ./configure I still get the message:

checking for pygtk-2.0 >= 2.0.0... Package pygtk-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `pygtk-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'pygtk-2.0' found

looking at my path it shows:

So it's there?!

Am I missing something here?

Yes, it doesn't need the full path, just the path leading up to pygtk-2.0.pc. Try

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig

Sometimes it's useful to include /usr/lib/pkgconfig to. I have

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig

in ~.bashrc so the variable is set each time I open a terminal. Hope this helps. Good luck.
