add ubuntu 12.04 repositories to ubuntu 10.04
Is it possible to add the repositories for ubuntu 12.04 to ubuntu 10.04? I ask this because some of the applications i need have newer versions available in 12.4 and i don't want to compile from source to install them into 10.04.
Ideally i should just be able to apt-get the latest version of the software i want.
thanks in advance

Hi,
what you describe is what is commonly called (in Debian parlance) "running a mixed system". This is extreemely prone to breakage (if it will work at all). I think you should upgrade to 12.04. See
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pr...Recommended.29
for instructions for upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04.
Is there any reason you haven't upgraded already?

Nooooo. 12.04 packages are compiled against different libraries in many cases. Not a good idea at all. Dependencies would be broken everywhere.

ahh thanks for clearing that up.
I can't upgrade because its a company machine and they don't want to(don't ask me why)
Ok so can I install the package(syslog-ng) from a deb file that i can get from the Ubuntu updates site? or will this also cause dependency problems?

Hi
If you don't want to upgrade your system you should backport the package that you want, or look for backport made by someone else (perhaps there is an ubuntu ppa).
Basically this consists of getting the source deb package (from 12.04) and then use it to build the binary deb package on the 10.04 system. How easy this will be varies from package to package.

Hi,
I just had quick look and it seems you are in luck since syslog-ng 3.1.2 is in the offcial backports repo for Ubuntu 10.04
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-backports/syslog-ng
Cheers,
