add program to your path

I installed both tmux and SVN on my work machine, however I have to use the whole path when
executing the programs.

Code:
/home/US/casper/local/bin/tmux
/usr/local/svn/bin/svn
when i complained to the sysadmin, he said - 'Just add them to your path"

I don't know what he means, and it would be really cool if i could just type in 'svn up'
at the command line instead of "/usr/local/svn/bin/svn up"

carpal tunnel syndrome here we come.

Your PATH variable stores where to look for executable files:
Code:
$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/bin/vendor_perl:/usr/bin/core_perl
You can then add to this by updating this in your shell's rc file (eg .bashrc):
Code:
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/be/included
