I don't believe there is a way to modify that via the command line although I don't use graphical environments and have not used GNOME in years.

I do have a great bookmark however, check out http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/GNO...CONFIGCOMMANDS and see if that helps you with your config of gnome. Always remember to check the gnome man pages as well.
