AD / CentOS

Okay, so this is a complete noob question, and I just have no idea what's going on - maybe someone can help me out.

We have a network with seemingly AD controllers, even though we just bought a BRAND new server and installed CentOS on it. When you log into a machine, you can use the domain that was used for the old server.

Basically what I want to do is start fresh and create my own domain because currently the shared software on the old XP machines are not showing up, etc. It's a huge mess. With this, should I be able to control the user permissions on the accounts they log into if they join the domain via workgroup? Also, will I have to configure winbind in some odd manner to bind it to active directory?

I don't know where to start.

I guess you need to find out more about your domain and if it has any forests or redundant systems. Seemingly AD is vague. MS has tools that allows for ad diags and that is a good place to start also. Technet has all that if you don't have the server 70-29x series books.

To just start over then you need to know more about the AD uses. It may be that you do much more than log on to a domain with it.

To start over you may wish to look at openldap.

Might look at the 2X.com products that may assist you in a quazi-AD setup.
