ad blockers for Linux
 

Does anyone know of any ad blockers for Linux? I am using AdSubtract with Windows XP but have not been able to find a similar facility for Linux.

I am unaware of anything that specifically blocks ads, but if you use the Galeon browser (and possibly any other Gecko based browser?) you can stop pop-ups easily enough.

I sometimes use privoxy, and it works quite well. You just set up your browser to use 127.0.0.1 (localhost) as a proxy, and start the app. You can change your settings etc. from your browser.

With mozilla it is edit->preferences->advaced->scripts & plugins, uncheck "open unrequested windows".

Move over to Mozilla: right-click an ad and block this ad server. Bingo!

To have a real ad blocker, look into squid(?).

I use mozilla, and have a really big hosts file.
it has loopback addresses for many of the sites
where ads are hosted. mozilla doesn't handle
that very well though, and spends too much time
trying load files that i don't want loaded anyway.
i wish mozilla would just have maybe a 2 second
timeout for files listed at 127.0.0.1, and not give
me an error box i have to click when it can't load
the file. phoenix doesn't work on redhat 6.2 which i
use most of the time. If i could compile mozilla
myself, and i think that would be too hard, i
would try to add code just to not even try to load
anything at 127.0.0.1, and i would get rid of a lot
of those error boxes.
anyway, you can do a search for a hosts file,
and there are a few sites that have them.

I had that same problem with mozilla and loopback addresses(popup saying connection refused to ads.whatever.com), but that bug has been corrected in the last version of mozilla 1.2. ;)

i have the latest mozilla, and i haven't seen that error
in week. I guess thats why. I've been happier for a
week and didn't even know it.

What I said does work you know.

I wasn't disputing you edward78. the allow unrequested
windows was the first thing i clicked when i downloaded
the mozilla that had it. i'm really using the hosts file to
block ads inside the pages. before mozilla had the
popup blocking built in, the hosts file is all i used. i had
tried a proxy ad blocker, but i decided i didn't like it.
i also have a big list of hosts just to make my dns lookups
go fast ( by skipping it) i used an old windows program
called fastnet99 to make me a hosts file from my
bookmarks. I haven't really looked for a program that
does the same thing in linux. whenever i can't load
a page for a few days, i go look for it in my hosts file
and comment it out, and restart my browser. I guess
thats the price for having the hosts file. When a website
moves, i can't get it until i figure out what happened.

man, i didn't even notice the right-click, block images
from this site setting, that jetb mentioned. Thats the
sort of stuff that happens when i'm the only person
i know that uses linux. I only know the stuff i figure out
myself or read about on the web.
