How do I find out which Linux kernal I have installed?

I would also like advice on the type of external DVD/CD R/RW unit to use. I have tried an LG one and it's not reconized! Other need software to be installed from a CD/DVD before they will funct5ion and as thic Notebook is not fitted with such a drive I am stuck!

uname -a
