Check if your new kernel has fuse support:

grep FUSE /boot/config-2.6.27.7-9-default
CONFIG_FUSE_FS=m
Installing the fuse package and the ntfs-3g package should be enough AFAIK. You will need to "modprobe fuse" before
using the ntfs-3g filesystem.

I still think that is will be a lot easier to simply use a live distro.
