Accessing the terminal- it wants a password and is rejrct the only one in use

With several issues to be resolved[Installing Firewall and using Wine to access iTunes] I need to access the terminal.
When I attempt to access - terminal asks for the password - fair enough
The only pass word there is, is the one I use for all other instances - sign on authenticate etc.,- Terminal rejects that and asked for the same thing
So what is it that 'Terminal' not likes or would like for that matter?

How are you trying to get a terminal?

If you trying to "su -" or "su" it will probably bork with ubuntu, since ubuntu disables the root account, requiring you to use sudo instead. try

$ sudo -i
and enter your user password.

Which distribution? About Terminal you have application named "Terminal" on mind? Did you tried login in text console (switching to it with CTRL+F1)?
