Access denied error 1405(28000) on new MySQL installation

Hi.I Just Installed MySQL on debian without a root password.
When I run :~$ MySQL -u root or :~$ sudo MySQL -u root
I get "Error 1045(28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password:NO)

It's my first time Installing MySQL and have very little knowledge of what I can do to troubleshoot this.
Any help would be appreciated!
