Unhappy access console in blackbox?

Real n00b questions here........

I just started to mess around using blackbox and like it so far. Except for a couple of things.

1. How do I access the console? Right click and I get the menu but there is nothing there about the console........
I found xconsole, but that is not the bash shell console that I need and am used to.

2. Got a link to show me how to put icons on my desktop. there is nothing there. i like having an icon to my home directory and such.

Thanks for any tips and such.

yeah, I found what I did wrong. I actually had to include it on the install. it wasn't installed by default with Mandrake 9.2
