Absolutely New to Zorin 15, Now Lost Wi Fi Connection

Good Afternoon everyone,

I've been using Windows all these years. Now I have to familiarise myself at least a little with Zorin, which is basically Linux trying to be Windows-on-the-surface. (Thanks so much for the effort, Linux users, but where's my Network and Sharing Centre in Zorin's Notifications Tray?).

Just managed (mostly by good luck) to install Zorin OS 15 on VMWare in Windows 7 and the system promptly lost its Internet connection.

I created a new VM, reinstalled Zorin, had the Internet for one day. Next morning, no net connection.

I use portable wi fi Internet, no Ethernet, on Win 7. No Network and Sharing Centre in Zorin's notifications tray.

Grateful in advance for step by step guidance. Baby Linux to get a Win 7 user started. I need to know how to reach the menu where I can add in my wi fi name and password so Zorin can connect and hopefully, stay connected. Thank you all very much.

Regards,

Cardinale

What do you mean by portable wifi? USB?

Vmware creates virtual network adapters that connects to the host adapter. It will appear as a wired connection to the guest regardless of type. How is the guest configured?

Michael,

Thanks for responding.

A portable Wi Fi is a little, round gadget the size of a lady's palm. It is also called a portable Hot Spot. In the UK its known as pocket WiFi. I don't know if you've ever seen ladies use a compact to freshen their faces before. It's that size, but double the thickness.

I don't know how to configure Zorin at all. I've been searching for its Network and Sharing Centre so I can add in my WiFi name and password, but I can't find it.

Zorin keeps complaining "No WiFi Connection", but it won't tell me what to do or where its Network settings are hidden.

I've searched for step-by-step guidelines on How To Connect Zorin OS to Win 7 Internet, but nothing there.

I opened up a Terminal screen to see if there were any helpful words, but saw a blank screen, so closed it up again.

No idea what to do. Any help from you or anyone deeply appreciated.

Shutdown zorin and in the virtual machine control panel networking settings posts its configuration.

Make sure there is an adapter and I suggest configure it nat.

Restart zorin. This should create a virtual wired adapter and allow you to connect.

michaelk (Moderator): Michael, I could kiss you! You are a real genius! It worked! The Adapter was wrong, it said Bridged. I changed it to NAT, restarted the system and voila! Everything is alright! Deeply grateful for your efforts on my behalf.

OK, I know this is just the first baby step. This is a brand new way of life, and I have a lot to learn, but hey! Who was it who said a journey begins with one step? You just helped me solve my first problem. I know I will face a lot of learner's problems, but God Willing, and with Divine Blessings and with generous people like you and rokytnji, I will learn.

rokytnji (Veteran) : Extremely grateful for the links to Linux guidebooks. I will copy them all into my saved Linux How-To's in Zorin as well as in Win 7.

I am so thankful to you both. After all you two have busy lives, yet you took time out to help me. Many Blessings upon you both and your loved ones for your kindness to me.

Frankly, I was scared, thinking I'd gone very wrong, and I was beginning to feel that Linux is a very techie thing, not meant for ordinary people like me. It was my last effort before giving up on it.

Cardinale.
