for the power-off issue you need to tell us wether your board uses APM or ACPI for power management...

as for the software question, mandrake in itself comes with most of what you'll ever need... just go into the package manager and select what you want and it'll install it for you... that's the easiest way...

of course there's a few sites where you can get some more software if you want/need to... for example:

For Mandrake

http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/
http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/
http://www.linuxprinting.org/
http://plf.zarb.org/packages.php
http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/
http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/
http://kde-apps.org/
ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors...linux/official
Thers's lots of support for Linux on the web.

LQ is one of the best resources I think.

i dont' know what kind of power thing my mother board runs off of.i do know that it is a asus p5p800 motherboard in there if that helps any.

that means you use acpi someone else who knows about madrake can tell you how to enable it

Try searching about enabling APCI, but if that doesn't resolve your problem, the next time you shutdown your computer hit (I think) F2 to go into verbose mode. See if there are any errors as it shuts down...and see if it makes it to "shutdown hda".

i have put into verbose mode and it gets to shutdown and then just stays there till i push the button to turn it off
