absolute gets to startx and stops loading

Hi all,
I am a newbie to this site and Linux. I am trying absolute on a older gatweway 256ram 20 gig hd at the suggestion of a friend. He loaded abasolute on it for me. After i connected the first time today I tried to change the screensize to fit my monitor and after that all I can get to loading is to where it says " type in startx " . I need to know how to get it to keep loading ? I apprecaite any and all answers.
Thanks,Rumur

Can you be little more clear? I don't understand you... Are you trying to say that your system just don't start in GUI? Or it starts in GUI and then display is scrambled and you get in text user mode and then said to type startx?

If you want to edit resolutions of your system, you will need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

to be honest I don't undsertand much in computer lingo and have just started learning a little so I don't know what GUI means. The Linux program is loaded on the HD and I have no disc. The HD was cleaned and does not have a windoows OS on it,only Linux. The text is not scrambled.what the last 2 lines say are :
starting up X11 session manager then it says you can now type startx to begin.
Please undserstand my ability at the moment may not be as high as a 5 year old since I am new to all of this.
Thanks

What happens when you type 'startx<return>' without the quotes?
