User Mode Linux is a set of kernel patches that allows you to run the Linux kernel in user space (i.e. under another Linux OS). it can be used to play around with different Linux distros without buying additional hardware or multibooting. It's also become an increasingly popular way to virtualize servers (i.e. one computer can run many separate Linux servers).
