about upgrading the kernel

after i upgraded my kernel do i have to reinstall my alsa drivers cos they were compiled on the old kernel

If they work you don't have to do it. If they don't then yes. I've had times they kept on working and times they didn't.

does it have to be an rpm can it be the source i used to compile the kernel

yes there is nothing wrong with using the stock kernel source or others from rather than your distros rpm or src.rpm your distro most likely patches the kernel a bit and the distros source.rpm will most likely give you the default config file they use.

the kernel doesn't figure into package dependancy in any real way so stepping out of the rpm thing will have no ill effects.

alsa sound card drivers and support is actually a part of the kernel so you get that with a new one.
i have never seen a situation where the kernel alsa drivers will not work with the alsalibs already installed but a guess it is possible with a very old alsalib the alsa drivers might not compile or run correctly without upgrading to newer alsalib but as i said i have never seen that happen and i have changed kernel version alot.
