Question About installing Debian on an external hard drive

Hello all:

I want to install Debian 8.1.0-amd64-cinnamon-desktop on an external 200 Gb hard drive to try it and learn from the challenges it might pose for doing it. My idea is to have Windows 10 intact running on a Lenovo - H50-50 Desktop.

My first failed attempt was today after about 3 hours formatting the HDD with a file system ext4 that supports LVM and encryption.

During the install I was asked if I wanted to boot Debian alongside with Windows by adding that option with the Grub wizard. I replied that I wanted Debian to run and write its own Grub from/on the external hard drive so it works as a pen drive / jump drive.

What do you suggest?

Thanks for reading.

Lightbulb Grub installed on external disk

Hello forum:

I found the answer myself, This time I did install Debian Linux without the encryption that is what it consumes so much time, I made sure to correctly answer that question about the bootloader. There was my mistake. I answered that I wanted the grub to recognize that the system have another Operating System, which could be mentioned on the boot menu; Then I selected the external hard drive as the destination for the grub install. It worked!

However, there's another question left, since I'm trying the distributions, I wonder what are the pros and cons of having an encrypted drive with LVM, why an user will select those options anyways?

Thanks for reading

LVM was & still is really a server type file system, it allows for adding extra disks into the filesystem to increase storage capacity. A regular user does not need to use it, stick with ext4.

(Also, if you want to encrypt, I would only do it to my data.)

About encryption on Debian

Hello all:

How to encrypt the /home folder or any folder after the Linux distribution or Debian has been installed?
Does encryption slow the pc performance?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a folder encrypted?

Thanks for reading,

I encrypted my home partition on Debian and didn't find that it slowed things much, but encryption does have some overhead so it may depend upon your usage.
I found this brief how-to for encrypting home directories but I've not used it myself:
https://wiki.debian.org/TransparentE...7s_Home_Folder

Edit:
Advantages:
If somebody steals the machine they can't get at your data because it's encrypted.
Disadvantages:
If you forget your password you lose access to the data stored there.
