About compression on CD

Hi!!

I'v been trying to put some packages, etc (for backing up)on a standard 700mb CD.But the size doesnt seem to be enough, despite tcompressing them! :(
However,I have observed that many linux distros (e.g. knoppix) comes packed with a lot of stuff whose total size is sure to exceed 700mb CD. So, do they use some special kind of compression? If yes, what/how?? Can I incorporate something similar to store more data on my CDs as well?

Look at gzip and bzip2. If you're already using bzip2 then that's just about it, I think. There's no special secret compression program that only special people are allowed to use. :)

Knoppix uses compression. Somewhere on Knoppix's web site you can find an article about remastering Knoppix into your own Knoppix variant. It details the way in which this compression is implemented.
