A sendmail related question..

Hello,

I have 2 questions related to sendmail:

1.Suppose if I am setting up a sendmail MTA for my intranet, should each client be running sendmail server package or just the client package of sendmail (is there a separate client and server package for sendmail?)...If so what is the package for the server and what is the package for the client?

2.Once setting up the mail server what are the configurations to be done in the client side?...I am not asking for an HOWTO here, but please let me know of a site which could help me with this as I am not finding any useful one in google.

Thanks.

1. There is no client package of sendmail. You setup sendmail in a box to be used as mailserver and then configure clients to use it. Clients could be gui mail programs, such as thunderbird, outlook, or command line utilites such as pine, mailx, mutt, or webmail products like SquirrelMail.

2. You setup a client to use your mailserver, by defining as smtp server (or outgoing mailserver) the box running sendmail. The configuration depends on the program you use as client.

Thanks Mr.bathory,
Let me ask one more thing...Once the mailserver is set as an SMTP server, should the client also be running the same sendmail server packages ? If so, every client is also running the same server package..is it not? and suppose if we are shutting down sendmail service off the clients what happens to the system-generated mails such as from cron scheduler?

thanks...

I think that you should read this and this, to help you understand what a server (MTA) and a client (MUA) is.

Thanks for those references, but still I am left unanswered with the question, if a client stops sendmail service it is then left with no system-generated email messages...and that is what my doubt is.!

If you stop sendmail in a box running linux, then it's not possible to deliver mail either locally or remotely. So there will be no system-generated email messages.
