a secure place to download
after reading numerous threads on checksum errors, I decided to download redhat 9 Once again. Because it may be a faulty download that I have.
what are the good sites you recomend for downloading. pls give as much as information you can, as I am new to linux and dont understand a hell. |
Is
shrike-srpms-disc1.iso different from shrike-i386-disc1.iso ? |
Yes. The srpm disc is a disk of source rpms. The shrike-i386-disc1.iso (and 2 and 3) are the install disks you need to download.
|
what is a source rpms?
Do I need it for my redhat installation? my machine is Amd thunderbird @ 1000 / 80gb hard / 384 Ram .. Is this enough for RedHat 9. |
That is plenty for RH9 - I would suggest that you get apt4rpm (apt-get) for RH9 since RH are discontinuing support and updates in April I think.
Srpms are source rpms and are not tied to a particular architecture (i386, 686, etc). They build rpms for your system. RPMs should do the trick, though. |
here is the newest situation,
I downloaded bootdisk.img and managed to create a bootdisk, and did a linux mediacheck at the boot prompt and got the result failed for all the three shrike ISOs. am I missing something or what........? |
where did you get the files from? did you checksum the files to make sure they weren't corrupted?
and if your pc will boot from cdrom (check your bios settings) you only need the 3 iso images. a link on how to burn the isos to cd: http://linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/howtoburn.html a link on checksums: http://linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/verifyiso.html |
yes, I donwloaded md5 program for windows, and created and verified cheksums. those were faulty.
and at the boot prompt I (with linuxbootdisk) checked them with linux mediacheck, and came up with the answer "failed" I did a google search for red hat and downloaded from a site called "lerr...." or somewhat, can't remeber the name. I downloaded using IExplorer not the FTP. Now I am going to download using WS-ftp. if you know of a secure mirror that contains original Redhat 9 goodies, please let me know. :) |
I always get mine from www.linuxiso.org - I've never had a problem with those files.
|
now downloading from the linuxorg, thank you for the assitance.
and thanks for those links, now they are in my favorites;) |
No problem.

I have a adsl conection. to download a one ISO it takes about 2.5hours.
Is it safe to download another ISO image while the firstone is still downloading? Is it safe to browse the net ? ____________________________ don't want ISO to get corrupted like last time;) |
It takes me about 2.5 hours also. I download 1 at a time, this is because by d/ling 3 isos at the same time you will find your speeds cut so each downloads at a third of the speed - it will still take hours.
Browsing the net, though, that's not a problem. |
Well, how safe is your setup to begin with? I have gone to other sites while downloading without any problems. The more you download the slower your connection is going to be. I usually download at night while I am sleeping or if I go out for awhile, and when I get back, the download is complete.

what is the best method? ftp or internet explorer?
