a quick video performance question

I have a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 with the latest nvidia-glx driver.
With glxgears I get about 1500 FPS using XGL/Compiz, and about 800 FPS with Xorg. - There is a slight increase when I use the nvidia-glx-legacy driver, but opengl - apps like google-earth start skipping.

Is this ok, or could I get a better performence?

That's probably about what you'd expect. I'm stuck on a 6200TC at the moment () and it gets around 2400. If it's an AGP card you could look at enabling FastWrites and SBA, you need a motherboard that supports it though I believe most should.
