Exclamation a question about linux firewall FIRESTARTER !


do i really need a firewall for linux.. ? i thought linux was secure even without a firewall and antivirus? how good is this firestarter firewall ?

Linux is only as secure as the person who configured it to be. I would use a firewall regardless. Firestarter is good, yes.

thanks lord-fu,

so what exactly is the difference between this firestarter firewall and iptables firewall ?? i was reading a guide on iptables and found it really hard..so this firestarter can really replace iptables ?

It doesn't replace it, Firestarter is a GUI front-end for IPTables. If you have a router, it provides it's own firewall. I use Firestarter as a backup for that. I forward certain ports that I use regularly thru the router firewall, and open or close them as necessary in Firestarter. Works very well.
