what does . and .. signify in each directory

Also could you post a bit of info about the question in the title - it helps others to determine if they are able to help when browsing the questions.... Otherwise some people might just skip the post, and you will not get a good answer... but trickykid has been curious, like me to find out the question, and given you the answer this time :-)
